Cutting Horses: California Winter Roundup March 11-15

Amateur cowboys and professional horse riders alike flock to the PCCHA’s Winter Roundup each year. With prizes ranging from $1,500 to $50,000, this high-stakes event is a thrilling competition that honors California’s Wild West heritage. From Wednesday, March 11 through Sunday, March 15, you watch the action at the Paso Robles Event Center. What exactly are cutting horses? “Cutting” is a western riding-style horse competition where a horse and rider are judged on their ability to separate a single animal away from a herd, and keep it away for a short period of time. Both horse and rider must possess an innate “cow sense,” with quick responses and sharp turns. Usually, American Quarter Horses are used for cutting. This unique skill was crucial in the days of cowboys and cow trails, and this rodeo event is a fun way to celebrate California cowboy history.
